Our extrafine single pigment watercolor Monte Amiata Burnt Sienna is prepared with pure Monte Amiata Burnt Sienna inorganic mineral pigment. This is a natural earth with hydrated iron and manganese oxides extracted in Tuscan. It is not known when the quarrying of the row material started, the Italian botanist Pier Antonio Micheli mentions it in 1733, but it was probably already used in Etruscan times. Monte Amiata Burnt Sienna is obtained from the “raw” form by calcination. C. Giannetti, an Italian chemist, written in 1873 “presso le cave di dette terre la Società sta per costruire appositi formi per la calcinazione delle terre gialle [per ottenere la terra di Siena bruciata]”, at the quarries of Monte Amiata the Company building special molds for the calcination of the yellow earth [to obtain burnt Sienna].
