Description

Our extrafine single pigment watercolor Genuine Indigo is prepared with pure plant based Indigo pigment. This is obtained from the processing of different plants, depending on the world area. For example in Europe from Isatis tinctoria or Woad, in Far East from Persicaria tinctoria (or Polygonum tinctorium), in South America from Indigofera suffruticosa. The main indigo producing country has long been India (its name originates from this fact), where Indigofera tinctoria was and is still worked. The Indigo which Nila Colori uses to produce this watercolor comes from India. The manufacturing process of this pigment is fascinating and involves the fermentation of the plant in big tanks to allow the extraction of the coloring principle, which will then precipitate as a pigment, due to an oxidation reaction.

Genuine Indigo watercolor by Nila Colori, prepared with this pure pigment, is rather lightfast, opaque and has a high tinting strength.

Genuine Indigo pigment is milled with just the right amount of a mixture of Kordofan gum arabic (binder) and vegetable glycerin (humectant and plasticyzer). These are the ingredients which are historically the main characters in the production of the watercolors and which give the best results regarding ease and pleasantness of painting. We don’t add any filler or any other organic compound, which might alter the color over time.
