Our extrafine single pigment watercolor Chinese White is prepared with pure Chinese White inorganic mineral pigment, chemically zinc oxide. This is a pigment known since ancient times and it is used as an artists’ pigment at the end of the eighteenth century. In 1834 zinc white was marketed for the first time as “Chinese White”: it seems that the name “Chinese White” has come from the oriental porcelain that was very popular in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Chinese White watercolor by Nila Colori, prepared with this pure pigment, is transparent and extremely lightfast.
Chinese White pigment is milled with just the right amount of a mixture of Kordofan gum arabic (binder) and vegetable glycerin (humectant and plasticyzer). These are the ingredients which are historically the main characters in the production of the watercolors and which give the best results regarding ease and pleasantness of painting. We don’t add any filler or any other organic compound, which might alter the color over time.
