The Pigment Maya Blue – Type 2 by Nila Colori is prepared by joining plant based indigo with a white clay. It gets its name from its historical origin: it was identified as the responsible of the blue color of different wall paintings and artifacts of Maya peoples (as in Bonampak), without initially understanding its natural source. After investigations and exeriments, scientists managed to discover that it’s constituted by indigo (a natural deep blue pigment obtained all over the world from different plants) fixed on peculiar white clays which were present in the Americas (attapulgite or palygorskite).
Use: In fine arts for the preparation of watercolors, temperae, oil colors and acrylics.
