This is actually a <strong>cobalt-doped glass<\/strong>, i.e. potassium and cobalt silicate. The history of this pigmens goes many back many centuries: it likely was part of the blue color of some glasses of ancient Egypt. During the\u00a0<strong>Middle Ages<\/strong>\u00a0anyway artisans began to produce it to be used as a pigment, but it was mostly used during the 16th and 17th century. Its production involved the\u00a0<strong>fusion<\/strong>\u00a0of cobalt oxides (extracted from minerals) with sand and potash (potassium carbonate). The smalt is thus obtained: it&#8217;s then ground and used as a pigment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Extrafine Handmade Watercolor Genuine Smalt<\/strong> is made in Italy by Nila Colori and is an <strong>intense blue<\/strong>\u00a0color tending to violet, with\u00a0<strong>low tinting strength<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0really high transparency<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>lightfastness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Genuine Smalt<\/strong>\u00a0pigment is milled with just the right amount of a mixture of<strong>\u00a0Kordofan gum arabic<\/strong> (binder) and <strong>vegetable\u00a0glycerin<\/strong>\u00a0(humectant and plasticyzer). These are the ingredients which are historically the main characters in the production of the watercolors and which give the best results regarding\u00a0<strong>ease and pleasantness of painting<\/strong>.
