Our Extrafine Handmade Watercolor Maya Green is prepared with pure plant based Maya Green pigment which we prepare with the traditional rediscovered method. It has a composition similar to the one of Mayan Blue and it differs just for some little details of the process. It gets its name from its historical origin: it was identified as the responsible of the blue color of different wall paintings and artifacts of Maya peoples (as in Bonampak), without initially understanding its natural source. After investigations and exeriments, scientists managed to discover that it’s constituted by indigo (a natural deep blue pigment obtained all over the world from different plants) fixed on peculiar white clays which were present in the Americas.
The Extrafine Handmade Watercolor Maya Green is made in Italy by Nila Colori and is prepared with this pure pigment, is moderately lightfast, semi-transparent and has a medium to low tinting strength.
Maya Green pigment is milled with just the right amount of a mixture of Kordofan gum arabic (binder) and vegetable glycerin (humectant and plasticyzer). These are the ingredients which are historically the main characters in the production of the watercolors and which give the best results regarding ease and pleasantness of painting. We don’t add any filler or any other organic compound, which might alter the color over time.
