Extrafine Handmade Watercolor Genuine Stil de Grain

Our Extrafine Handmade Watercolor Genuine Stil de Grain is prepared with pure plant based Stil de Grain pigment lake. It’s prepared from unripe buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) berries, often also called Avignon berries (or Stil de Grain). A beautiful yellow is obtained: it has traditionally been used for the preparation of lakes based on chalky earths. Depending on the method of preparation, the obtained yellow can tend more towards orange or green. This pigment is warm yellow. With respect to other plant based lakes, this has a greater covering power, due to the chalky properties of the mineral base.

The Extrafine Handmade Watercolor Genuine Stil de Grain is made in Italy by Nila Colori and is prepared with this pure pigment, is semi-opaque and has a moderate tinting strength.

Genuine Stil de Grain pigment is milled with just the right amount of a mixture of Kordofan gum arabic (binder) and vegetable glycerin (humectant and plasticyzer). These are the ingredients which are historically the main characters in the production of the watercolors and which give the best results regarding ease and pleasantness of painting. We don’t add any filler or any other organic compound, which might alter the color over time.

Attention: This color has lower lightfastness than the others. After exposure, it slightly tends towards brown.
