Our Extrafine Handmade Watercolor French Ultramarine is prepared with pure French Ultramarine pigment, chemically sodium polysulfide and aluminosilicate. Between the end of the XVIII and the beginning of the XIX century, it people began to realize that the blue color of lapis lazuli could be artificially produced. In the early decades of 1800 it was understood how this could be done and Ultramarine Blue thus began to be produced. The process is quite simple and involves non-toxic inorganic reagents. The final product is a aluminosilicate with sulfur and sodium entrapped in its lattice.
The Extrafine Handmade Watercolor French Ultramarine is made in Italy by Nila Colori and is prepared with this pure pigment, is extremely lightfast, semi-transparent and has a medium to high tinting strength.
French Ultramarine pigment is milled with just the right amount of a mixture of Kordofan gum arabic (binder) and vegetable glycerin (humectant and plasticyzer). These are the ingredients which are historically the main characters in the production of the watercolors and which give the best results regarding ease and pleasantness of painting. We don’t add any filler or any other organic compound, which might alter the color over time.
