Our Extrafine Handmade Watercolor French Red Ochre is prepared with pure mineral Red Ochre pigment. This is a natural earth of superior quality coming from Vaucluse in Provence, France. Its color comes from the presence of anhydrous iron oxides (hematite), which are naturally mixed with clays and calcium carbonate. It is an ancient pigment and is used since millennia by the humankind to achieve his artistic works: it is the most permanent of all pigments and we can still appreciate it, for example, in the paintings of the cave of Altamira in Spain.
The Extrafine Handmade Watercolor French Red Ochre is made in Italy by Nila Colori and is prepared with this pure pigment, is extremely lightfast, semi-opaque and has a moderate tinting strength.
Red Ochre pigment is milled with just the right amount of a mixture of Kordofan gum arabic (binder) and vegetable glycerin (humectant and plasticyzer). These are the ingredients which are historically the main characters in the production of the watercolors and which give the best results regarding ease and pleasantness of painting. We don’t add any filler or any other organic compound, which might alter the color over time.
