Our Extrafine Handmade Watercolor Cobalt Blue is prepared with pure mineral pigment Cobalt Blue, chemically a blue spinel made of cobalt aluminate. This pigment was probably already in use during the dynastic Egypt, but was rediscovered in Europe towards the end of the 1700s and has been successfull since the XIX century till today.
The Extrafine Handmade Watercolor Cobalt Blue is made in Italy by Nila Colori and is prepared with this pure pigment, is extremely lightfast, semi-transparent, has a moderate tinting strength and when dry it appears a bit lighter than wet. The texture of this watercolor is close to that of an earth: so we might call it “natural“.
Cobalt Blue pigment is milled with just the right amount of a mixture of Kordofan gum arabic (binder) and vegetable glycerin (humectant and plasticyzer). These are the ingredients which are historically the main characters in the production of the watercolors and which give the best results regarding ease and pleasantness of painting. We don’t add any filler or any other organic compound, which might alter the color over time.
